It’s been a while since I’ve done a curly hair post so here it is!
I’ve been trying different products lately to get a desired curly hair look for Bear. He’s never had his hair cut (though he has had trims), and I regularly wash and detangle his hair.
But sometimes, it takes more than water and a brush to get through it:
I decided to do something new and try different products while I was at it.
So you’re probably wondering what I used and how I used it, right? Let’s go!
First, you need to thoroughly cleanse the hair.
Curly hair gets a lot of buildup and it tangles very easily. Have you ever wondered why you see so many curly people with flat-ironed hair? That’s the deal. It takes a lot of effort to maintain a curly hairstyle and let’s keep it one hundred, not too many people want to go through the process of detangling on a regular basis.
So, let’s keep it clean. While a cowash works heavenly, you also need to get to to root of the hair to thoroughly cleanse it. I recommend Aunt Jackie’s Coconut Wash shampoo. One, it smells terrific, but most importantly, it gives a nice, deep clean without sulfates and all other crap that your hair doesn’t need.

Second, you need a great conditioner.
Next, I used my old faithful, Bumble and Bumble’s BB Curl. I love this conditioner so hard because I can use it one of three ways: as a cowash, a leave-in, or a rinse-out. For Bear’s look, I used it to help detangle and rinsed it out.

Curling Creams are your best friend.
Next, I had to set Bear’s hair with a curling cream. Shea Moisture still works wonders for us and I will forever be loyal to them. I highly recommend their Kids’ Cococunt & Hibiscus Curling Cream. Not only does it smell great, but it’s super light. And it gives Bear’s hair a lot of bounce!

I’m showing all of this because the products I’ve recommended, anyone can use them for their curly hair. (Type 3 and Type 4 is considered curly with Type 4 be tight curls.)
In the Curious Case of Second Day Hair…
For a second day revitalization, I highly recommend Mixed Chicks Morning After Hair Redefining Foam. With a lot of water and your favorite detangling brush, squeeze a few pumps into your hand and put it your (or your child’s!) curls to refreshen. I recommend a lot of water because if you use the foam by itself or little water, you’ll get a guaranteed Afro.

So, as you can see, I don’t use a lot of product and from start to finish, it doesn’t take Bear’s hair very long to get to the finished product. Now, this isn’t something I do on a daily basis, but something I do for sure, once a week. This style will last a few days before I have to rewash (using a cowash) and just use the curling cream to set.
It’s a lot easier than it looks!
So what’s the end result?
Pretty dope, huh?
