I’ll be honest — I didn’t think much about smart glasses until I started noticing them everywhere. At the grocery store. At my kid’s soccer game. On the guy waiting next to me in the school pickup line. They look like regular sunglasses, which is exactly the problem.
That’s why when I heard about AntiZuck, a new iPhone app built specifically to alert you when smart glasses might be nearby, I downloaded it before I even finished reading the article.
Wait, what are we even worried about here?
Smart glasses like Meta Ray-Bans, Snap Spectacles, and a handful of other brands can quietly record video and audio from the wearer’s point of view. No obvious light. No phone held up. Just someone looking at you — or your kids — while a camera runs.
For most people wearing them, that’s just how they livestream a hike or take hands-free photos. But it also means there’s no real way to know, just by looking at someone, whether you’re currently being filmed. That ambiguity is the whole issue. A stranger could be filming your child at the park and you’d have no idea.
So how does AntiZuck actually work?
Here’s the part I found genuinely clever: the app doesn’t try to spy on anyone or figure out who’s wearing the glasses. It scans for the Bluetooth signals that smart glasses broadcast — the same kind of background signal your phone uses to find your AirPods — and flags when one of those signatures pops up nearby. It shows you a rough sense of how close the signal is and how confident it is that it’s actually smart glasses, not just, say, someone’s Bluetooth speaker.
A few things I appreciated as a parent who is admittedly picky about privacy apps:
- It’s all on-device. Nothing gets uploaded anywhere, no accounts, no location tracking.
- It’s honest about its limits. Smart glasses don’t broadcast Bluetooth constantly — usually just when powering on, pairing, or coming out of the case — so this isn’t a foolproof “gotcha” tool. It’s a heads-up, not a guarantee.
- It’s not trying to shame anyone for owning smart glasses. It’s just giving the rest of us a little more information about our surroundings, which used to be a given before cameras got this small.
Why this matters more once you have kids
I’ve written before about how much of parenting in 2026 is just… renegotiating privacy that didn’t used to require negotiating. We think about who has our kids’ photos, which apps are listening, what a “smart” toy is actually recording. Wearable cameras that look exactly like sunglasses are just the next chapter of that same conversation.
I’m not going to pretend an app is a full solution. It won’t stop anyone from filming at the park if they want to. But there’s something to be said for simply knowing — the same way a baby monitor doesn’t prevent anything from happening, but it does let you respond instead of being caught off guard.
Should you download it?
If you’re the kind of person who already checks whether a doorbell camera is pointed at your yard, or who reads the fine print before letting your kid try a new app — yeah, I think this is worth having on your phone. It’s free, it’s quick to set up, and honestly, it made me feel a little more oriented in public spaces than I did before.
Is it going to catch every pair of smart glasses in a crowded restaurant? Probably not. But it’s a small, useful nudge back toward knowing what’s happening around your family — and in this era, I’ll take every nudge I can get.
