So, I have a confession of sorts:
I’m a huge Michael Jordan fan. I love him and plan to my name my future unborn kid (boy or girl) after him. Yet, I’ve never seen the original Space Jam. Like ever.
Recently, we’ve been bombarded with a ton of ads about the new Space Jam. Now, I’m not a big fan of remaking any movie, TV show, song, etc. I always feel leave well enough alone and create brand-new stuff. Bear loves basketball and he loves LeBron James. Win-win, I guess.
So, we streamed Space Jam over the weekend. I would’ve loved to go to a movie theatre but for now, it doesn’t seem like it’s too safe to do that right now. Nevertheless, we streamed on our HBO Max app and watched.
Bear loved it! I liked the nostalgia of certain things that appeared in the movie (I won’t say for risk of spoilers), and even a funny reference to Michael Jordan! (He doesn’t appear in the movie, but he’s mentioned!)
I’ve seen a few complaints online about how cheesy the movie is but some of the adults are not getting the point – it’s supposed to be! It’s supposed to be cheesetastic! It’s supposed to be full of jokes for kids and maybe some humor adults will get.
I like how it was modernized for the times – LeBron’s son had aspirations for a game coding career, instead of basketball. It’s so important to show Black kids they don’t have to pursue careers in entertainment but they can also work behind scenes.
So, is it a movie worth watching? If you have children, I say it is. If you don’t, you might think it’s corny (hell, you might think it’s corny if you do have children). It’s not a bad movie, though. Don Cheadle was excellent and LeBron acted pretty well! I give it a 4/5 stars!
