Juneteenth is the honor and celebration for when slaves were finally free. Now, contrary to what people think about July 4th, 1776, there were still slaves. Slaves weren’t free until 1866. A whole-ass hundred plus years later.

Texas was the last state to notify slaves had been free for two years. Two. Whole-Ass. Years. While there are a few theories as to why that was (read: money and free labor), what is important is that my ancestors were freed.

Juneteenth has always been honored in Texas and different states, including California. This year, with the many deaths of racism and police brutality, it has a special meaning and purpose.

I love shopping from black-owned businesses. I love giving back to my community and spreading the word to my friends and family about the purchases I’ve made. So, I’m going to keep this short and sweet.
