Bear has taken an interest in ships. Partially because he and Maks play World of Warships every night. Maks brought home a bunch of books for Bear to comb through and he just fell in love reading about the history of old warships.
So, we thought, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be fun to take Bear to see one?’
Maks got us tickets to visit the USS Iowa, and we drove down. First, the ship is a whole lot bigger than it looks. A whole lot bigger. And I have claustrophobia and a fear of heights and water. So yeah.
Despite all of that, I actually enjoyed visiting the USS Iowa and would even go back. The spaces are small to get through. Even skinny Bear complained how tight and steep some of the steps were.
It was nice to see real-life American history in person. Every stop (we did the self-guided tour so we could go at our own pace) we made on the ship had a bit of history behind it. From what their average schedule looked like, to the different duties they all had to perform, to exact times of when food was served.
There was also a jail on the ship for obvious misbehavior and a tribute to the ship’s dog – Vicky (which is short for Victory, and Vicky was a male) – in honor of a scavenger hunt for the kids, which Bear thoroughly enjoyed!
It was nice to breathe the nice sea air and get “out” of L.A. (even though we were still in very much L.A., but at least we weren’t home!).
Here are some pictures of our excursion!
