It’s been a while since I read a book that wasn’t fiction. Sometimes, I read memoirs (which I love celebrity ones), and I often watch documentaries (and I just finished the one on the Murdaugh family; I’ll save that review for another blog post!).
But self-help books have never been my thing. I don’t think they can’t help, but I’ve always just never felt reading a book on improving my overall self was my jam. If I ever wanted to self-improve, I watched my spending habits, my eating habits, and how much negativity I consume regularly. Self-care is so important, y’all.
And then I discovered The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck.
Honestly, I’ve seen that book for a while but once again, because it fell into the self-help category, I opted not to read it. I just thought the title was cute and quirky – kinda like me.
Then I saw Congresswoman Katie Porter reading the book, and well, since I like her and think she’s something kind of dope, why not?
It’s free on Amazon Prime, for those who are members.
The book is a quick read, only 200 pages. I started reading it last week, and I’m almost done with it (I’m a slow reader despite this only being 200 pages). But it’s been so helpful! Some of the stuff I realized I already do, like being honest about if something is super important to me and I need to get involved, or realizing I’m probably not going to care about this issue in about 10 minutes.
The book lets you know it’s okay to be human and not put super high expectations on yourself. It’s okay to find the balance somewhere between mediocrity and superiority. It also lets you know it’s also okay to not, well, give a fuck about things when you need to focus on yourself.
It’s such a great book. It’s already changed my perspective on a lot of things. It’s also given me a much-needed boost of confidence to go tackle the world and feel I don’t have to put on a cape.
Have you read the book? What do you think of it? Sound off in the comments!
