Years ago, we decided to cut the cord. We were hipsters before the term became relevant. During that time, the choices were very limited and we ended up going back to cable a short time later.
Around last year, we decided paying a 200+ cable bill really wasn’t in our best interest so we cut the cord again. We also picked up a host of streaming options such as Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu. I want to share our experiences with some with some recommendations.
The best overall app: Hulu
We just became Hulu subscribers again. We had an account before but it was when it was brand-new and nothing really to write home about. The new and improved Hulu, however, is a BFD. Just like Disney+, you can customize each profile and there is a wide variety of entertainment to choose from. I have to get my 90 Day Fiance’ fix, y’all.
The best family-friendly app: Disney+
It pretty much goes without saying Disney is the best family-friendly one out there. You really can’t go wrong with Disney and have each member of your household choose their profile and their interests. You also have every company Disney owns such as Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.
With just about every single Disney cartoon and movie, plus a few other ones under the Disney umbrella, it truly is a win-win for everyone.
The best movie app: Netflix
I mean…duh. With hundreds (possibly thousands!) of movies to choose from, you really can’t go wrong here. They also have added a variety of Black TV shows and movies lately and *black fist in the air* I approve.
The best FREE app: Tubi
Tubi isn’t really well-known and I’m legit surprised. I would think a totally FREE app would get more traction, but it hasn’t. I’ve watched a variety of free films, documentaries, and caught up with a ton of Unsolved Mysteries (only during the daytime, tho). And the best part – it’s totally FREE.
The best paid app: Prime Video
Pay as in you’ll pay per movie or show. If you have Prime, some movies are free. To rent them for 3 days, it’s a nominal fee worth about a gallon of milk. They also have a large variety of movies to choose from. In all honesty, it doesn’t have the variety as the aforementioned streaming services, but it’s still a good thing to check out if you have Amazon Prime.
Honorable mention: Sling
This was a great app but lately, it’s fallen way short of expectations. It’s become increasingly hard to log in and honestly, paying $40+ a month for a janky streaming service wasn’t worth it. If they get their ish together, I would gladly recommend it again. As of now, not worth the headache.
What’s your favorite streaming service?
