So, in my homesteading adventures, I’ve grown a whole-ass lavender and rosemary bush. And for the past couple of years, I’ve struggled to come up with things to do with that bush. Drying it out and hanging it up as a decoration (something I’ve planned to do but never did) was an option but I wanted more.
Then, my brilliant husband suggested – ‘Why don’t you come up with a natural air freshener?’
Brilliant, I have to admit.
Now, I did some research online to figure out what type of formula I wanted to use without burning down my house or creating a disaster. The original incarnation of this wasn’t as strong as I would’ve liked it to be. So here’s my take, give or take a few drops.
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 4 Tablespoons of dried lavender
- 2 Tablespoons of vodka (you can use rubbing alcohol as a substitute but it’ll have a medicinal scent)
- 24 oz Mason jar
- Peppermint essential oil
- Eucalyptus essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Funnel
- Coffee filter or paper towel
- Spray bottle
Directions:
- In a small pot over medium heat, bring one cup water to a simmer. Add four tablespoons dried lavender, and let steep for five minutes. Remove from heat.
- In a small pot over high heat, bring 1 1/2 cups water to a boil.
- Meanwhile, using a funnel lined with a coffee filter or paper towel, pour the steeped lavender water into a clean, 24-ounce mason jar. Discard the filter. If you want to use the lavender as a decoration inside the bottle, keep it.
- Add the boiling water, two tablespoons vodka, and lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint essential oils. You can choose the quantity of them.
- Shake vigorously and let cool before pouring into spray bottle.
