I remember learning cursive writing in 3rd grade and before I became a mom, I thought it was just something every school still did. To my chagrin, cursive writing was pulled out of schools, only to reverse course years later.
The beautiful thing about being a parent is parental choice. While it has rightfully gained a negative connotation, I’m using this as a positive thing. Over the course of the summer, I’m going to help Bear learn cursive writing.
I told Bear cursive writing was just as important as print writing (and we’re still working on that as well), but cursive writing will definitely help him in the future. He would be able to sign for things, and he would be able to maybe being able to decipher other people’s cursive writing.
I also wanted Bear to have a leg up on some of his friends and classmates. While I don’t know for certain with all of them, the ones I do know, aren’t being taught cursive. I hope if Bear learns cursive it will help his friends want to learn it as well.
So, how am I teaching Bear cursive writing? Amazon!
I chose this because I felt it was super easy for Bear to learn and it has been! It’s available on Amazon for a super low price and Bear uses it every day. He usually does two pages at a time. He’ll be cursive-ready by the time he enters 5th grade in the fall.
It’s also a win for parents so all you have to do is just double-check the work and it frees up your time to do other things. Win-win for all, right?
It’s a book I highly recommend that you get for your child and start them as soon as possible.
Have you tried to teach your child cursive writing? How did it go?
