The term self-care has really kicked in a lot over the past five years due to a variety of reasons. People realizing they don’t have to be online as much as they need to. People realizing they probably don’t need all those items they own. People realizing they need to be outdoors more.

But what is self-care? It is the practice of taking care of oneself to preserve health. It’s to recharge, protect, and grow to be the best version of you.

But, self-care doesn’t have to expensive. In fact, many self-care techniques are actually cost-efficient. Many of the ones I’m about to mention, are FREE. Yes, that’s right – freeeeeeeeee. And y’all know I love a darn good deal and I especially love free!

I’ll divide this list by mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Mental Self-Care:

  • Read a book for 30 minutes each day.
  • Set a time limit for social media each day.
  • Do a social media cleanse.
  • Journal.
  • Watch cat videos.
  • Get a stress ball.
  • Set quarterly goals and focus on them.
  • Clean your home.
  • Burn a candle.
  • Declutter your space.

Emotional Self-Care:

  • Start saying NO.
  • Spend time with loved ones.
  • Laugh. A lot. Loudly.
  • Volunteer.
  • Spend time with pets.
  • Spend some time alone.
  • Go on a picnic.
  • Buy yourself flowers.
  • Go to a concert or live event.
  • Try a new cuisine.
  • Try a new restaurant.
  • Watch a movie.
  • Create art.
  • Try a new skincare routine.

Physical Self-Care:

  • Drink tea.
  • Try a new hairstyle.
  • Practice yoga.
  • Spend more time outside.
  • Use essential oils and a diffuser.
  • Spend time in the water – swim or wade.
  • Go for a bike or scooter ride.
  • Take a bubble bath.
  • Try a new shower routine.
  • Get a mani or pedi. (or both!)
  • Get 8-10 hours of sleep every night.
  • Drink more water.
  • Eat more fruits and veggies.
  • Walk outside for 30 minutes.
  • Cook a healthy meal.
  • Get a massage.
  • Shower and brush your teeth every morning.
  • Brush your teeth every night before bed.

Spiritual Self-Care:

  • Read the Bible.

  • Pray daily.
  • Listening to inspirational music.
  • Join a religious institution (church, mosque, temple…)
