Yesterday, bae and I went to go see Bohemian Rhapsody since we’re both huge Queen fans (yes, I like Queen).

We heard some of the reviews about the movie weren’t that great, namely there wasn’t enough grit in the movie, but we wanted to check it out regardless since we loved Queen and Freddie Mercury. My hubby, being the nerd he is (I’m saying that in a loving way), is also a huge fan of Brian May, but it’s divided between Mr. May being a genius behind the books and a genius on the guitar.

Anyhoo, we went to see the movie in IMAX and were blown away by the sound and presentation of it. It was beautifully done despite the numerous issues the movie had.

It’s a long movie; over 2 hours. It does go buy pretty quickly and you’re not wondering why a certain scene or era is taking so long or if something could’ve been cut out altogether. I personally thought it was a good retelling of the band’s history, though I do felt it was more Freddie-centered than anything.

Now yes, I understand Freddie was a force to be reckoned with on his own, but I felt it would’ve been nice to see bits and pieces of the other band members – Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon – and their lives. I really got the feeling I was watching the Freddie Mercury movie and those three guys he played with, when Queen as a whole, was an extraordinary band.

In terms of the movie not being gritty enough, personally, I’m glad the filmmakers decided against that. We got the feeling Freddie was promiscuous, dabbled in drug use, and isolated himself from those closest to him at one point in his career. He could also be a bit of an asshole when not even pushed.

But Freddie was a genius talent, a beautiful soul, and larger-than-life personality. He went through a lot as a child and struggled with his sexuality at times, but his music and penmanship was just out of this world.

If people wanted to see how he dealt with having full-blown AIDS and the effect it had on his life in his later years, there are plenty of pictures and film out there. I didn’t want to see his suffering and how he pushed through it to still record albums, do personal appearances, and make videos. I wanted to remember him on a high note and I think the band members did a great job of that.

Rami Malek was amazing in the movie and I hope he gets an Oscar nom for it.

While Bae and I saw this as a couple, this isn’t a family-friendly film. I highly, highly recommend it!

  1. So I asked my dude if he wanted to go see it and he was like “what’s that?” 😒 I was so floored. So I played the video of the song and he recognized it once it got to “I see a little silhouette…” And he still wasn’t interested. Might have to throw the whole dude away.
